In August 2005, President George W. Bush signed into law the Energy Policy Act (EPACT) of 2005, creating a national Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS). This important legislation establishes a baseline for renewable fuel use starting with 4 billion gallons per year in 2006 and expanding to 7.5 billion gallons by 2012. In fact, many industry experts consider this projected consumption a minimum which will be reached well before its anticipated date.
Overall, the impact of the EPACT of 2005 will be far reaching as it is expected to have a significant effect in the U.S. in terms of reducing crude oil imports, creating more than $6 billion in investments in renewable fuel production facilities and adding over $200 billion to GDP.
