In August 2005, President George W. Bush signed into law the Energy Policy Act (EPACT) of 2005, creating a national Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS). This important legislation establishes a baseline for renewable fuel use starting with four billion gallons per year in 2006 and expanding to 7.5 billion gallons by 2012. In fact, many industry experts consider this projected consumption a minimum which will be reached well before its anticipated date.
Overall, the impact of the EPACT of 2005 will be far reaching as it is expected to have a significant effect in the U.S. in terms of reducing crude oil imports, creating more than $6 billion in investments in renewable fuel production facilities and adding over $200 billion to GDP.
