Lubbock, located in the northwestern part of Texas, is commonly referred to as the "Hub City," due to the multitude of highways that connect the city to surrounding towns throughout Texas and other neighboring states. It also is the economical and educational "hub" of the multi-county region referred to as the South Plains.

Lubbock is home to numerous colleges and universities, most notably Texas Tech University, which has a student population of nearly 30,000. In addition to Texas Tech, Lubbock hosts a number of other colleges and universities, including: Lubbock Christian University, South Plains College and Wayland Baptist University.
