The Baltimore Metropolitan Area, also known as Baltimore-Towson, is a Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) encompassing northeastern Maryland and part of southern Pennsylvania. The MSA is comprised of Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County, Harford County, and portions of Howard County, and York County, Pennsylvania. Its estimated population of 2.7 million makes it the US' 19th-largest metropolitan area. As a regional business and financial hub, Baltimore's robust growth has generated more than 95,000 net jobs since 2000.
The state of Maryland supports over 130,000 businesses and employs over 2 million non-farm personnel. The largest industries by number of businesses include Professional, Scientific & Technical Services, Construction, Health Care, Finance & Insurance, Wholesale Trade, and Manufacturing.
Baltimore also is considered to be part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area that incorporates overlapping markets of Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, Maryland. The Baltimore-Washington Combined Statistical Area (CSA) is the US' 4th- largest.
